About Pippa Heylings
Pippa Heylings is a climate change expert who has lived and worked around the world before moving to South Cambridgeshire seven years ago.
I moved to Impington in 2012 with my family after many years living and working in East Africa and South America. We chose Histon & Impington as a place to live because of its closeness to Cambridge for work, and for Impington Village College for our children.
We have fallen in love with the area with its mix of people and strong sense of community. I have been active in the area from the beginning, having worked with and supported a range of community organisations: I’m on the steering committee of the local sustainability group, am treasurer of Histon Hornets U17’s girls football team, and I’ve been closely involved with the development of the Histon & Impington Neighbourhood Plan.
My work on the Neighbourhood Plan triggered a desire to serve the local community on the District Council, where critically important decisions will be made over the next few years that will determine the character, growth and viability of our villages.
My Professional Work
I am a specialist in environmental and climate change policy. My professional work is at national and international level, working with governments, NGOs and the UN on developing public policy. After working as a director of a large NGO I set up my own company which works with scientists, the UN and government organisations to ensure that local voices are heard and policy decisions are evidence-based, sustainable and practical.
I am a member of the Liberal Democrat Federal Policy Working Group responsible for drafting our Party’s policy on the Climate Emergency.
A qualified teacher, I also mentor young and mid-career professionals studying Conservation Leadership at Cambridge University. And as a professional mediator, I recently worked with the NHS to bring staff together to agree on ways to solve the staffing crisis and restore morale and better working conditions.
A Chance for Change
I have spent my career working around the world to tackle climate change. I understand the wholesale policy changes needed to avert environmental disaster. I’ll push for a strong green economy and green jobs.
In Cambridgeshire, scientific research, business and farming will all suffer and the regulations that protect us as citizens and consumers will be damaging for all but the wealthiest. I will fight hard to stop Brexit.
My family knows how important the NHS is and I want the best public services for everyone. I will fight to defend our NHS and schools, for access to mental health care and affordable housing.
